Students Discover the Power of Nature
Year 13 students from Beauchamp City Sixth Form - accompanied by some from Beauchamp College - recently returned from an unforgettable three-day residential trip to Iceland, where they explored the country’s dramatic physical geography first-hand.Travelling across southern and western Iceland, students visited a range of geological and geographical sites, including a geothermal power plant that supplies hot water to the entire city of Reykjavik, even heating pavements in winter to prevent ice. The group also took in some of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, including Skógafoss, Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss, each offering a unique insight into the country’s natural beauty and hydrological systems.
A visit to the Lava Centre gave students a deeper understanding of tectonic activity, major eruptions and the impact of earthquakes across the island. One of the highlights was the chance to cook eggs and bake bread using steam from the hot mantle plume beneath Iceland, a memorable way to experience geothermal energy in action.
The trip offered a rich extension to classroom learning, bringing textbook concepts to life and sparking curiosity about the natural world. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and enjoy the adventure of fieldwork in one of the world’s most geologically active regions.
